As mentioned in the U.K. dog press 26th September a new strain of virus, a deadly form of enteritis, called Haemorrhagic Gastro-enteritis [HGE] that causes dogs to deteriorate rapidly. The first signs are vomiting, then diarrhoea becomes bloody. Dogs have experienced stomach cramps before dying within 24 hours.

Seven dogs are said to have died within 3 days, 4 in Chepstow and 3 in the Forest of Dean. The number affected in Wales with parvovirus, said to be directly linked to the new strain, has increased in number.

A Forest of Dean vet has said that any animal showing signs of the virus should be taken to a vet for treatment immediately as this is a very virilent illness. Owners should be aware of the consequences of putting off a visit.

This virus also known as Coronavirus has similarities to parvo and can be fatal affecting dogs of all ages. It also affects cats, horses etc and humans but is not transmissible across the species. At present there is no vaccine for it and it is transmitted by infected faeces.

There is no need to panic but be sure to take the usual precautions such as leaving your shoes outside the gates when coming home from a show.

This is a deadly bacteria. it can and will travel.
