Welcome to the Strobroy Rough Collies

of Loraine & Robert Hannah

Our interest in the breed began years ago when I was a child. A family friend had Rough Collie's and I just fell in love. They were the most gentle animals that I had ever came across and I loved spending time with them. Then tragedy struck and I was attacked by a pitbull type dog. I was a very young child and from that moment on I was petrified of dogs and would never go near another dog for years to come. I had to make do with my Dad recording all the Lassie episodes on Betamax and each day when I came home from school Ii would watch them until I knew all the words of every episode.

My mum always wanted a Standard Poodle and myself and Dad always wanted a "Lassie" dog so combined with my fear of dogs and my parents difference in preference for breeds we never did have that family pet. Years later when I met my husband, i discovered that he had the same love for Rough Collies that Ii did and after one of his friends purchased a Rough Collie he was determined that he would have one.

The Past

The early years of our marriage were dedicated to bringing our children up and when finally they got a bit older and I had also started to put my fear of dogs to one side we decided that it was then time to go in search for our long awaited and much loved Collie. We found an advert in the paper and at last had found our first Collie. Kane as he was named by his breeder bonded with us straight away. He was my husbands soul mate and even knew when he was coming home 5 minutes before he appeared. He spent the first 9 months being the only dog in the house and we had taken him to a few shows were he had done relatively well. We decided then that we would like more collies and we would like to start showing fultime so we got a glorious blue bitch whom we named Krystal. We thought at first that Krystal would also join Kane in the ring but she failed to grow her coat so when she came of age we mated her to Wicani What's New Pussycat and we hoped after the pups that the long awaited coat would come and that she would have grown in size too. She had 6 beautiful pups (5 tri's and 1 blue). She grew a lot more coat but unfortunately she only measured 18.5 inches so we couldn't show her and took the decision to rehome her to a pet home.

We also had to take the decision to rehome Kane. It broke our hearts but it was a decision that had to be taken due to circumstances and he went to live on the Isle of Man with his breeders Kennel Partner and has settled in well and is doing well at shows. Our third dog was the heartbreak dog of our whole time that we have spent with dogs. Simba was brother to Kane from the second litter and when he came of age we started to show him. He had a 100% show record being placed at all shows attended until he was 1.5 years old. He qualified for Crufts and gave us our first experience exhibiting at Crufts and went on to being awarded the VHC from a huge class under Mr Jack Bispham. He was a natural showman from the word go and never let us down in the ring. I never went to a show without him as it just wasn't the same. I couldn't wait to stud him and hopefully have a son or daughter of his but this was never to be. After trying to mate him to one of Krystals daughters unsuccessfully we decided that we would let him mature a little more before trying again and in between times we would have him eye tested and after we hoped to have him hip scored also. At this time we were also considering our future breeding plans and being limited on space we had to be very careful and be stringent on our plans and what dogs we had. Unfortunately Simba failed the eye test so at this point we decided that he should not be bred from. He is now living in a little quiet village in Peterborough enjoying being the only dog and is absolutely spoiled rotten. We hope to visit him later this year.

We had more heartbreak before things started to look up for us. In December 2008 we booked a blue dog Merlin from the Maysinder Kennel. Merlin was with us for nearly a year but as he got older Merlin and my older dog didn't get on. Again we had to take the decision to rehome him and he went to live with my friend who has Krystal. We still own Merlin but at this point we still don't know if we will ever show him again. He did very well at shows from when he was 6 months old including 1st MPD at Windsor under Geoff Duffield, 2nd MPD at SKC under Stuart Mallard and 3rd MPD at Scottish Collie Champ Show under Gwen Hartley and also 1st PD, Best Puppy Dog and Best Puppy in Show at Scottish Collie Open Show under Jayne Llewellyn. Merlin won joint puppy of the year in the Ayrshire Collie/Scottish Collie joint competition 2009.

The Present

At present here at Strobroy we have 3 males and 2 bitches. We look forward to the future and just enjoy every minute that we have with our dogs. They are the most spiritual beings that i have ever came across and I could never be without them.

Wicani The Voodoo Touch invokes Strobroy

Well I need say no more - Voodoo has the same temperament as his litter sister but still always into something. We have started to show Voodoo and his future show career looks very promising. He has the most glorious markings Ii have ever seen on a tri!

Wicani The Classic Touch at Strobroy
(Bellcott Silver Cloud at Bermajo x Hadomar's Touch of Darkness at Wicani (Imp)

You have to meet Caliph to believe how laid back he is. He is so full of love and tenderness. Not the best showman in the world as he hates the ring but we do try in hope that one day he will surprise us all and show his socks off!!!

The above present dogs are all bred by Angela and Keith Harvey who we thank for their continued support and mentoring

Russian and Lithuanian Junior Champion Flamin Legend Darian with Wicani

Phoenix 2 as we call him is owned in partnership with ourselves and Angela and Keith Harvey of Wicani. He was bred by Olga Stepanova and we don't think he has ever grown up. Phoenix 2 thinks he is still an 8 week old puppy. He is so playful and full of fun and he just loves it when the kids come home from school!
