Coarhabeg Collies at Home

I first fell in love with Collies at the age of 12 when I was staying on a farm but it was not until many years later that I was able to own a Collie, when I bought Jason, a Border Collie as a family pet. He lived for 12 and a half years and we mourned him for 4 months before we could bring ourselves to buy another. It was now 1978 and this time we made the transition to a Rough Collie, when we brought home a sable and white bitch puppy, again just a pet.

I did however decide to let her have a litter and mated her to a son of Arranbrook Mr Chips of Aberhill and kept two sable and white puppy bitches. Coarhabeg Little Nell and Coarhabeg Little Hannah. I had been to an Exemption Show and met Jo.Williams of Springdew Collies who introduced me to the world of showing and I decided to apply for an affix which was granted so I was able to register my first litter with the affix straight away.

Coarhabeg is the name of a tiny Hamlet of farms and houses on the Island of Valentia off the west coast of Ireland, where we went for summer holidays.

I started showing the puppies with a little success and eventually bred from them but it wasn't until we moved from Sussex to Yorkshire and mated Nell to Ch. Camanna Chicken George that we at last had a litter that we became quite excited about. We kept a beautiful tricolour daughter called C.Little Valkyr [Kyr].

Coarhabeg Little Lindy-Lou

She was our first bitch to really achieve anything in the ring. She had an excellent puppy career winning numerous firsts, including Best Puppy in Show at Yorkshire Collie Club Open Show and later gained her Junior Warrant and Stud Book Number. Kyr only had one litter, from Ch. Can This Be Me at Camanna but in it she produced a tri bitch called C. Little Lindy-Lou [Lulu]. A lovely bitch in her own right and a beautiful mover, she won well and gained her Stud Number. From her first mating to Lynway Sandpiper, C. Figaro was born. He was a very striking puppy, deep black with a huge white collar and a very good mover. He did well as a puppy but developed an aversion to the ring. However he proved to be a very able stud dog and has sired a Reserve CC winner in our C. Gentle Zephyr and a 2 CC winner in Telforth Mr Blue Sky. Lulu's second and last litter in June 1993 was to Ch. Haradale Blue Moon and from 2 beautiful blue merle dog puppies in the litter I kept C. Tidal Wave [Roller] who, like his grandmother won Best Puppy at Yorkshire Collie Club Open Show, gained his Junior Warrant, won 2 Reserve CC's and then 3 C.C's to become our first home bred Champion. He was a wonderful, dignified, gentle and loving dog. We miss him a lot.

Figaro's litter sister Tosca, came back to us as a rescue and we decided to mate her to Mallicot Ace of Base. From the litter of 5, one really nice tricolour dog, C. Andantino at Alanita [Basil] went to live with Anita Franks where he did well and gained his Stud Book Number and we kept C. Crescendo [Credo], a wonderfully upstanding golden sable who won a Graduate class at Crufts, gained his Junior Warrant and has won 2 R.C.C's. They have both sired winning puppies and in fact Basil has now come back to live with us and has sired some excellent puppies.

Mystian Cherry Cola at Coarhabeg

Mystian Musical Fantasy at Coarhabeg
We have occasionally bought in stock from other kennels, bred on similar lines to ours, the most notable being a tri, Mystian Cherry Cola at Coarhabeg [Molly] and a sable, Mystian Musical Fantasy at Coarhabeg [Fanta], both sadly no longer with us.
Molly was a brilliant show girl and won well, gained her Stud Book Number and a Reserve Best in Show at an All Breed Show and then knocked out a tooth and ruined her show career but she presented me by way of compensation with three super dog puppies: C. Roaring Forty [Rory] a blue and his litter brother also a blue, Coarhabeg Silver Cyclone at Garronwood [Shay], by Caerluath Blue Legend of Figlidelvento. The third was C. Othello [Otto] a jet black tri by Roller. All gained their Stud Book Numbers, Rory is the sire of C. Lady of the Lake who has 1 C.C. Shay, who lives in Ireland with Mary Darragh has 1C.C, 4 Green Stars, 1CACIB and a Best in Show at an All Breed Show.

Fanta was a bright golden shaded sable, gained her S.B.N. and was the mother of C.Gentle Zephyr 1RCC, and grandmother of C. Little Wild Rose who gained her S.B.N.

In 2003 I brought out her granddaughter, a sable and white puppy bitch, daughter of Credo, C. Enya. She came 2nd in Minor Puppy Bitch at Leeds, on only her second outing.
