NEW DNA SCHEMES FOR SHELTIES At the request of the Shetland Sheepdog Breed Council the Kennel Club has recently approves three new official DNA testing schemes for the breed. Von Willebrands disease type V111 and Ivermectin sensitivity MDR1 will be available for the breed from Optigen and Laboklin. As from 1 January 2009, copies of all future test certicicates issued by these laboritories for these diseases will be sent directly to the Kennel Club where the test results will be added to the dog's details on the registration database. This will trigger the publication of the test result in the next available Breed Records Supplement, and the result will also appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog. Further details can be obtained from them at www.optigen.com and www.laboklin.co.uk Owners who have already had there dog [s] DNA tested for these conditions can send copies of the test certificate into the Kennel Club and the data will be added to the dogs's registration details. In addition, if the owner includes the original registraion certificate for the dog [not a copy] then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA results on it, free of charge. Please send DNA test certificates to - Health & Breeder Services, The Kennel Cllub, 1 - 5 Clarges Street, Piccadilly, London. SHUNTS IN SHELTIES, INFORMATION WANTED
One of the Breed Note correspondents for Shelties in “Dog World”, 5 September 2003, wrote that since asking for information on liver shunts as they had a puppy that was affected with it, they have heard of a number of cases and would be interested to know whether the incidence is increasing. The correspondent would be happy to collate this information and produce some statistics if people who have come across the condition are prepared to let them know. Information on the breeding of affected dogs is not required, purely the numbers concerned, and if possible the treatment received and the lifespan of the dog, if known. All information will be treated in confidence. If anyone has any
information that could be useful please email: Jill

: SURVEY INFORMATION REQUIRED
Mrs Jan Moody (Janetstown) is conducting a survey about bitches missing, reabsorbing their puppies, or had fading puppies. This does seem to be a problem that is on the increase, especially in recent years, and Jan has had many phone calls and requests for information and help on the subject, so she is trying to find out whether there is some kind of common denominator to these problems. Jan has devised a form which she will send out to anyone who think that they may be able to help. She is not looking for particular breeding lines, and will not require names of dogs and bitches, just the details of the seasons, lifestyle and diet, whether vaccine boostered, wormers used and when, and any other relevant details, which will be included on the form. Jan will either send or email forms and can be contacted
